Quick tips to save around the house.

Around the home, it's the small things that make a big difference. Whether it's the in the kitchen, laundry or bathroom there are heaps of things you can do to save on your power.

In the kitchen

1. When you need to boil water for cooking, boil the water you need in the kettle first. It's quicker and more efficient than a stove.

2. Keep your fridge and freezers well stocked. Fridges and freezers use more power when they have too much air to keep cool. Just be careful not to overfill!

3. Use microwaves or electric frypans when you can. They have a lower wattage and cook faster, so they use less power than other conventional methods.

4. If you're going away for a long time, empty, clean and turn off your fridge or freezer.

In the laundry

1. Always wash in cold water - did you know you use much more power heating the water to wash clothes than what the washing machine uses to run?

2. Use the sun to dry your clothes! If it's rainy outside a clothes horse by a sunny window or under the heat pump uses much less power than a clothes dryer.

3. If you need to use your clothes dryer - chuck in a dry towel! It speeds up the drying process.

In the loungeroom

1. Block up unused chimneys, seal gaps in floors, doors, and windows. Air leakage accounts for 15−25% of winter heat loss!

2. Use timers to control when your heating comes on. Have them set to come on just before you need the heater, instead of running it all day and night.

3. Turn things off at the wall when they're not in use. Leaving appliances on standby can add 3% to your power bill.

4. If you can, use an electric throw instead of a heater to heat an entire room.

In the bathroom

1. Hot water makes up to 27% of household power use. So spend a few less minutes in the shower to save on energy and water!

2. Average shower heads use up to 22 litres of water per minute. Change to a water-saving one and use just 9 litres! Less hot water means less power!

3. Switch off your hot water system when you go away for a week or more.

4. Opt for a shower rather than fill the bath.
