Salvos Bags of Hope

Published on

The Salvation Army estimates that over 14,000 people seek food relief in Australia each month but are unable to be assisted and go hungry. Sadly 40% of these people are children.

So, when The Salvation Army asked if our Aurora Energy team would like to help with their Bags of Hope drive, of course we said yes!

A Bag of Hope provides struggling Tasmanians with a bag non-perishable food in time for the Holiday Season. Each bag is estimated to cost around $40 and includes Christmas treats like shortbread, fruit salad, and custard, as well as essentials like sugar, long-life milk, tinned vegies, and juice.

Together, our Launnie and Hobart teams were proud to donate a total of 42 Bags of Hope.

How a Bag of Hope helped Samantha* in 2022

Samantha is a single mother with an 11-month-old son. She’s currently living in an expensive private rental and was referred to The Salvation Army Doorways Program by her friend.

Samantha was at first reluctant to ask for help. After visiting with the local Case Worker, Samantha stated that she felt at ease and reassured that asking for help was not a sign of weakness, but a way of helping her stay strong.

Samantha registered for the Christmas Cheer Program and when the day came to collect her allocation, Samantha was brought to tears by the generosity shown to her. There was a ‘bag of hope’ filled with festive food. Toys for her son, and herself, to put under the Christmas tree. Plus, to top it off, a voucher to purchase more food, or fuel.

At her next visit, Samantha was still overwhelmed by the generosity of people in our community. Samantha stated that we had made her Christmas one to remember and that her son will not go anywhere without the toys gifted to him.
